Length of Sermons

If you are a preacher or minister how long of a message do you preach? Does it matter how long a sermon or message is preached? Do you think it is easy to lose people's attention if the sermon is too long? What should be the average length of sermon? Why? If you aren't a preacher or minister how long does your minister preach? What length do you prefer? Why?

What do you think?

25 minutes works for me.. and that's how long the preachers at Northside preach for. Any longer and you have lost most of your audience, the oldies have dozed off and everyone's back is sore...

As I look back over the time I've been at my current location, I find I average out at about 45 minutes. It goes against my previous mantra--"I can't listen more than 39 minutes, why should I expect anyone to listen to me for any longer?"

Having said that, I'm not sure that the length of the sermon is the point--but the depth of what is said. If you find yourself repeating yourself (again and again and again) then you should have already wrapped it up. If you come to an end, don't start up again (I've heard preachers who concluded a single sermon at least three times).

Other considerations: If you notice that you're losing your audience, might as well pack it in. And If your church has a time-sensitive ministry (such as radio or television) then you need to be cognizant of how long you have. Finally, if you have multiple services scheduled back to back because of space constraints, it's probably a good idea to pay more attention to your time element.

Another great question.
Besides, I don't mind people going to sleep while I preach (it's probably the best rest they've gotten in ages), I just don't want them snoring and waking the guy next to them up.

My pastor usually constucts his sermon about 20 minutes then of course there is the 40 minutes of the rest of the service

I personally think 20-25 minutes is good and I have been known to go at least 30, but anything over 30 is way too long. I've heard some preachers go 45 and when they were finished I wished they'd go on. I've heard others who after the first 15 minutes I'm wondering when it will be over.

Since a good number of people have entrusted their precious time to me each Sunday, I feel responsible to be very prepared to insure against rambling or a boring monotone lecture. If application and illustration are woven throughout the sermon, it wil be easier to keep the audience. You can usually tell when a guy is rambling and when he is well prepared.

I have found that I have to pray so much more to preach a shorter sermon. :)

Sermons can be a LOT shorter than what we find in many evangelical churches. If television shows can tell a whole story in three 7-minute scenes totaling 21 minutes, why does a preacher have to drone on for 45 minutes?

I think it depends on the person. My favorite speaker to listen to, Matt Chandler, goes at least 45 minutes long. I'm never bored and almost always feel like it was cut short.

Then, obviously, there are those who can go 15 minutes and you can't wait for it to be over. It all depends on if you really have something worth saying or not.

It also depends on the audience. I'm in a rural setting where people aren't used to sitting very long (they work mostly outside going from one thing to another), so I have to keep that in mind. They also aren't necessarily people used to thinking deeply, so that must be kept in mind as well.

So, in my opinion, it depends on how much the speaker really has to say and how much the audience can really handle.

I speak about 30 minutes or so. But we all need to remember the the mind can only take as much as the seat can endure!!!!!!!

I left my church of 40plus years because the preacher's sermons were 10 to 12 minutes and totally devoid of substance. My pastor now goes about 30 to 40 minutes and I am hungry for all of it. I think it boils down to weather the pastor is called of God or is just making a living.
