Issues Confronting The 21st Century Church

I want to thank everyone for your prayers and help with which you have blessed my family. It means so much to us. I will know the results of biopsy test this next week. We appreciate your continued prayers. We are still in need of financial help, but a couple of people have sent enough for some of my medications this month, so thank you for that also.

I was wondering-what issues do you think will confront the 21st century church?

Will these issues that you pick change doctrinal stances, direction, and the missions of the church? If so, how? If not, why not? Do we sometimes make small insignificant issues "big" issues? Why do we do this? What can we do to focus on the isses that matter?

What do you think?

Share your thoughts.

I predict that in the next decade one of the issues will be the loss of freedom of speech for churches, especially on radio and TV.

Liberals, who shout about free speech, are the first to try to take away speech and ideas they don't agree with.

In Canada it is already illegal to read some sections of the Bible on air. How far are we from that?

There will likely be many issues for the church in the future in this country, but this is one in my view.

Kinney,
I see in my own church a direction that strongly suggest tolerance is becomming the rule for the clergy.
Our society cries for charges of hate crime, when in fact, the charge should be called Christianity. Our country seems to want to make being a Christian a crime for what the Bible clearly says ought not to be condoned. The sinner should be loved. The sin ought to be spoken out against. If society comes to church demanding preset conditions for their pressence in church, society ought to be reminded of what it means to have freedom of religion.
This election will determine a lot for the church. Our country is not in need of "Change" as much as it needs 'reform'. On one side of the isle, it will be much easier to 'reform' than on the other side that places its 'culture of death' before God's moral demands. So, we shall see after November 4 where our country is heading. Will Christians vote with morality or selfish desire to always pass the cost of living on to someone else?

as in all the other centuries before, evil will continue to confront the chruch. (the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms)

those that continue in the armor of God will meet it head on and stand. they will be the souls that continue to be the church.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

God is all powerful.
all praise and glory to God.

We are trav'ling in the footsteps
Of those who've gone before,
And we'll all be reunited,
On a new and sunlit shore,
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

And when the sun refuse to shine
And when the sun refuse to shine
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the sun refuse to shine

And when the moon turns red with blood
And when the moon turns red with blood
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the moon turns red with blood

Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the trumpet sounds its call

Some say this world of trouble,
Is the only one we need,
But I'm waiting for that morning,
When the new world is revealed.

I think the main one is, how do we love our neighbours? Particularly with the way the economy is going at the moment. A lot of us are likely to lose our jobs and our homes. How will those who manage to keep their jobs and their homes respond to that?
Also how do we love our homosexual neighbours (including Christians who are homosexuals)? How do we treat them with care and respect? And how do we make sure we don't compromise our beliefs and practises for the sake of political correctness?

Do we dilute the Word just to become more 'available' to the unsaved? This is mostly what's separating so many denominations and something secularists jump on with glee.

I'm so so sorry to hear about your health problems and will certainly be praying for you. God bless you.

That could be quite heavy. There is a new generation of militant atheism that will be addressed. The scientific community will respond and probably be very divided on the issues of intelligent design and young-earth creationism. I expect further polarization regarding gender roles and sexual identity. The emergent church movement will probably continue to grow and become more diverse. The natural progression from abortionists will lead to new atrocities. We are likely to also see a new strand of Islamic/Christian ecumenicalism.

Yet, a light shines brightest in the darkness. No matter how bad it gets, God is still on the throne, and we will ALWAYS have hope in Him. This world is not our home. I expect to see fantastic things in the prayer lives of Christians, and especially as it relates to evangelism.

1. Couples who co-habituate.
2. How we minister to homosexuals.
3. I’ll go with what Royce said – the loss of religious freedom.

There is a constant struggle between what we think is God’s Truth, how we apply that Truth, and what really is God’s Truth. As I see it we must balance our taking stands on issues such as the one above with the honesty that we could be wrong or missing how Jesus would apply this truth. Two things come to mind:

1. Not too many decades ago, mostly good, truth seeking, Jesus honoring folks believed that Scripture taught that racial division, especially in the churches themselves was truth. Through prayer and study, we now know that truth to be wrong.

2. In Matthew 15, Jesus has the following encounter with a Canaanite Woman:

22 Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."
24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."
25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.
26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."
27 "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

In verses 23, 24, and 26 the God of the Universe answers her with silence, no, and no which are all Scriptural answers if you will, in line with Truth. Yet, Jesus changes his mind in light of her request. We have to remember that we serve and worship a living God, not an inflexible text.

-Moral and ethical relativism
-Biblical illiteracy
-Lack of individual responsibility and commitment to family (as in, "I will do what's best for my family even if I don't personally enjoy it")

I think these issues are more of a problem because not only are they a part of the larger culture, but they are a part church culture as well...they leak into the church.

Hope you are doing better soon...peace to you.

I agree with you, 'Z'. We've come to a place where tolerance has become acceptance and therefore, those who accept say we are wrong to speak out against anything that the Bible clearly says is unacceptable in the eyes of the Lord.

I wonder if "issues" might change depending of the location and size of the Church. What do you think?

We need to get out of the idea that condoning one's actions is showing love for that person. Many churches today condone things, or overlook things in order to not cause irritated feelings, and therefore cause members to leave, and we all know that numbers are the name of the game, don't we.? if our numbers dwindle so do the donations and we can't go build bigger building so we can build larger congregations, whose feelings are going to get hurt if we preach the truth. Let's look at what Jesus said about the numbers game.
Mt:7:13: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Mt:7:14: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

When we condone things, or widen the gate are we really leading folks to salvation, or destruction? Tell the raw truth everyone will not accept it, but those who do will be saved.

Hello Brother,
I hope this message find you healing and closer to the Lord than you ever thought possible.

Thanks for returning those items. I was surprised - didn't know that I had done that!

Sin has become more acceptable. People not standing for the truth will hurt us as a nation. God's truth in the Bible is narrow in many ways. We can't call Sin a Choice. It is sin.

May I add that Redemption through the blood of Jesus is readily available. We have all sinned and has come short of the glory of God. He forgives and restores readily. But we must be truthful and sorry.

Blessings and Healing.

Interesting post and comments! I think the main issues the church will have to confront in this century will revolve around the shift of power to the southern hemisphere. The church is alive and vibrant there and it will be interesting to see if they learn from our mistakes or follow in our path.

I also think that many churches will struggle with the downturn in the economy. It makes me wonder if we can adapt and think of new ways to minister to people.

My two cents... =D

Also very grateful to God that your diagnosis does not include cancer!

As the world economy's outlook dips, the 21st century church needs to take a hard look about how to show benevolence, how to help each other in community and how to help others into community with Christ.

We need to examine scripture for what it says, not for what this fellow or that lady tells us that it says.

We need to learn how to resolve disputes in Christian love, so that we can help those outside of Christ resolve disputes.

We need to regain the Spirit of the closing verses of Acts 2.

I think this conversation is so cultural in nature. What faces churches in the NW or NE is going to be different to what I face in the Panhandle of Texas. Eventually we will all have dealt with the same things, but at a very different pace.

Issues of Postmodernism are hardly touching the culture in which I live - yet are completely pervasive in the NW. Not that I think that is all bad, hear me. I believe great missionality is coming out of Post modern thinkers.

Perhaps the greatest struggle will be the role of church at all. As we begin to leave our buildings to represent Jesus in the marketplace, I think the issues of governance, structure, institution will take on a different meaning and significance.

I notice that many are talking about the loss of religious freedom. I think if this happens, it will weed out those who are really of the faith and those who are not. Do I wish to loose my religious freedom? Absolutely not. However, in countries where religious freedom is non-existent, the churches are flourishing. This has to do a lot with what Jesus said about the cost of discipleship.

We here in the states are so spoiled, which leads to pride and arrogance. We worry more about the freedoms within our country, and forget we (Christ-followers) are mere visitors to this country and our allegiance is to the Kingdom of God.

I see the challenge not being from a legislative standpoint, but more importantly theoligical and the kingdom. We need to focus on things above, instead of here on this earth that is passing away. I pray that we would continue in the faith, love our neighbors (all of them, without regard to their particular sins), but most importantly love the Heavenly Father. Don't let earthly freedoms of losses of those sway you from the freedom that was claimed by Jesus. He tells us that the truth will set you free, with no limitations from the governments here on earth.

Pride and arrogance is a huge threat to our church, and is one of the main reasons people are leaving the church. We must repent of our religiosity and pride, and become humble and steadfast in the faith in order to reach our neighbors for Christ.

So I never gave you any feedback to your question earlier. I got excited about the good news on the test results and forgot. :p

As far as RM Churches of Christ go, I believe church structure will be an issue.

By church structure, I mean the roles people play within the church. I believe we need to go back and take a hard look at Ephesians 4.

I believe our theology surrounding the roles mentioned there has been dead wrong, and changing it to line up with Scripture will cause radical changes in our church structure that will ruffle the feathers of hundreds of thousands of people.

Glad to hear your health is better than it could be ;) Thanks for all the positive comments you have all over the interweb.

I think the greatest challenge that the church will/has always faced is how will we love God and others?

It seems that most people that read this think that the Church only exists in North America, or suppose the question to be directed towards us NA Christians, so I will answer that question.

Will we compassionatley serve our brothers and sisters in need while staying true to the truth?

Will we be able to "humbly accept the word that is planted on our hearts" and at the same time allow "faith and deeds to work together for our salvation"?

When/If our country falls, fails and we realize that our patriotism and our faith should not have been as co-dependent, will we still be able to say that God is good and bless him by loving?

I see the need for a move from religion as a theory (which seems to be the subtext of most religious organizations, i.e. churches) and from the current concept of the churches corporate purpose to an unapologetic practice of true Christ following manifested from the leadership through to the laypeople.
The days are fast behind us where we can perch ourselves in chairs and in churches and expect real growth and change to take place. The church will need to go to the people and stop expecting the people to come to church... it isn't happening now and will not happen in the future.
Each individual church will be forced to make the decision to change or generationally die off. Sadly I believe the latter will predominate and we will be forced to reinvent the wheel. Perhaps this is what we need. Perhaps we must become broken beyond repair so that God, Cornerstone, can rebuild from the ground up... that's how He often seems to work in the Individual, why not the corporate body.
Crisis isn't bad, it's how we choose to respond to crisis that shapes the effect.

Preacherman,

There have been several excellent comments on this interesting subject. You are the best at getting us to think!

25 or 30 years ago and more people lived in a very small world. If there were 3 or 4 churches in their community that was Christianity to them. And, likely if they became believers they chose one of those brands. Today the world is very small. The average high schooler can sit at a computer and in a few hours have a good idea about each denomination, the distinctives of every world religion, and learn what so called Christians are actually doing in addition to what they are saying.

We can no longer say we love those without Christ and live as if they didn't exist. The gospel that finds an open ear in most cases is one that arrives at the sinner's door in shoe leather. When Jesus commanded "Love your neighbor" He didn't have in mind a required emotion born of duty.

Jesus is the one who truely loved sinners. He ate with them, attended to their physical needs, and finally their spiritual needs.

When we care more for Jesus than any earth bound thing or person, when we get to the place where we don't demand credit for what we think we are doing for the kingdom, and when we love each other sacrificially we might have restored the New Testament church.

His peace,
Royce

Wonderful thoughts on what will be confronting the Church, not just in americ a but world wide. Again I appreciate everyone's prayers for me and my family. God continues to work powrfully in our life. We have been so busy with all that is going on in our life. As I mentioned we are in the process of moving and facing many changes in our life over the next several months. Please continue to pray for my family during this time of transition.

I have few questions for those who are in the in the Restoration Movement: Do you think the issues of roles in the church will be settled in the 21st century? Will the issue of how to worship (with or without instruments) still be an issue? Will leaders and others allow small issues to become big issues and make the church loose its mission over the next 100 years? What do you think?

I think there's a ton of issues that the American Church will face, but I only know some of the ones we're dealing with now.

1. The Church, in many places, has become a social club based on programs and activities rather than a family of Jesus.

2. We hire "professional" Christians to do the work of the body. From what I've seen, the hired ministers are usually the paid Christians.

3. We have effectively segregated people by age so that there is no real family in the Church. Kids raise themselves, and so on.

4. We have separated our lives into "spiritual" and "secular" areas. Jesus affects some of our lives, but a large majority of it we leave untouched by Him. (e.g. When we're sick, who do we consult first, God or a doctor?)

5. We spend our finances irresponsibly on buildings and programs (and cars and houses), but leave out what matters: helping the needy, reaching the lost, serving our communities etc.

6. We are Church-goers rather than Christ-followers. This is huge. Many of us seem to be more tied to an organization than to our God.

7. We are too patriotic. This comes about in many ways, but mostly I am thinking about the huge imbalance of full-time Christian workers in America compared to the rest of the world.

These are just some I can think of, and the reason I know of them is because I face them within myself. It's easy to point fingers I guess, but I need to deal with these in my life. My heart hurts for the American Church, and I pray God does whatever He needs to to make us genuine followers of His Son.

Hello Preacherman.
Just wandered over from Ted's as I read your comment on Holy Communion.

I agree whole heartedly with you and I feel it is important for me to receive Communion on Sunday to help me get through the week!

The words the priest says just before he starts giving Communion out are 'happy those who are called to the supper' and those words always makes me feel so priviledged.

My views of the election of Obama have now been published on Ted's blog if you are interested.

I know some may change the way it is practiced, how often it is done and even the days of the week to partake of it. I know that for me it has always been so benifital to my faith and relationship with God. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts on this blog. You are always welcome.
