"I AM"

Gen 3:13 Moses said to God, "Supposes I go to to the Israelites and say to them "The GOd of your faithers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shal I tell them?" God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM! This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you."

And we all know that Moses tells them "I AM" has sent them and they believe him.

Is that enough for us today. Knowing God as "I AM"? Think about it if you would for a while? God is I AM: Is our provider, our comfort, our strength, our sheild, our ever present help in times of trouble, our father, our guide, our life, and on and on we could go to describe our "I AM"

If it ever comes down to it and you could not tell mention the name of God and you only could describe His name as I AM, would that be enough? Could you lead someone to Christian just by telling them about I AM? Does the Church really know about I AM? If so what are we doing to let other know about I AM? If not why not? Does the world know about I AM? How can we enjoy I AM more and more eachday we live? How can we cherish and worship I AM in assembly and everyday life?

what do you think?

I AM - not just for Nick and Kinney and our brothers and sisters of the cross.

I AM - for the world!

Does our worship of The God who Acts manifest itself in justice and mercy for the communities where He has chosen to make His Name known through us?

I'm glad you're feeling better, PM. Keep challenging us!

Nick

NO, I don't think people have ever been satisfied with God simply saying I AM.

they want proof and evidence and then they still don't believe.

He says I AM because he really has no obligation to say more, and yet...

Darin,
Great point.
Just like the Israelites I AM wasn't enough for the them. They wanted more and more and more and more until the got sick of the quail.

My own comments address a new perspective (I think).

When God told Moses to tell them that "I am who I am has sent you," I believe he may have been stating more than just saying to Moses what his name was.

I think God had more in mind. I think he appealed to the memory of the Israelites remembering who God was without Moses having to tell them. He was relying on his solid track record that had been proven in the history of the patriarchs before Moses.

So, when Moses addressed the excuse of "How will they know you have sent me?" or "Who shall I tell them sent me?" God was really saying that "My track record speaks for itself, Moses, I am who I am."

I am able to deliver my people from bondage, I am able to use you, Moses, with all your weakness, to show them, and Pharoah, my glory. I am greater than Pharoah, greater than Israel's bondage. I AM!!

When we come with the message that I AM has sent me, the message must be proclaimed and let God's track record stand on its own merit. After all, it is all for his glory, not ours, right?

If I AM isn't enough, I think we may have strayed from the true gospel message.

Just my two cents. I hope I can get the gray matter stirred up a little with these comments.

Blessings.

One of the functions of the Lord refering to Himself as "I AM" has always seemed to me to be a way of distinguishing Himself from the many false gods of the world, as though he is saying "I AM, as opposed to those gods who are not". It is a reinforcement of the point that everything else is because He is.

Would this message fly today? I honestly don't know.

Odgie,
Great point about the false God's. Because we do see him going after every single false God of the Egyptians after he introduces Himself as "I AM". Great point!

I think one place we can start is being "incarnational" in our thoughts, motives, actions, and our doctrine. We need only read Hebrews 1:1-2 to know that Jesus gives a real time picture of how God acts and thinks.

I can celebrate, worship, and bring others to I AM by realizing that I am part of a body that is "the fullness of Christ."

"I AM" is the name which distinguishes our God from all others. He is uniquely self-sustaining. No other being is completely self-sufficient. God is unique from all persons of His creation and unique from all other gods. He alone can say "I AM".

Grace to you,
The son of I AM,

Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I [am] thy shield, [and] thy exceeding great reward.
Gen 15:7 And he said unto him, I [am] the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
Gen 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I [am] the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
Gen 28:13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I [am] the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
Gen 31:13 I [am] the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, [and] where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.
Gen 46:3 And he said, I [am] God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
Exd 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

As we read the old testament and see a statement using the small word “AM” it is always used to state the “truth in fact” the statements containing the phrases (should be, could be, seem to be, might be) are rare. The people of that day were not as skeptical as we are today. When they heard the phrase “I am” it was accepted as fact/truth.

Just for reflection and meditation: Jesus also used "I am" as he spoke about himself in ways that look back to the OT which looks forward to the fullness of God in Christ.

I am just so glad that God is my I AM. He is my source of strength, my help in times of trouble, my healer, my comfter, rock, solid foundation in which I stand, provider in life, redeemer, King of King and Lord of Lords, I could go on. I love God so much. I love I AM so much. When and if it comes down to it in life I do belive that I AM will be enough to convience people of a God who is above all and loved mankind so much that he sent his one and only to have eternal life. Thank you for revealing yourself to us as "I AM."

There is no question that when the God of all creation named Himself He used I AM. All that it means in the original language notwithstanding, when it's translated into other languages--say, English--the meaning expands. The first person present active says so much:

When the world was created, I AM.
When the Bible was written, I AM.
At this writing, I AM.
When the end of time comes, I AM.

That is just comforting to me, that He is I AM.

Blessings,
Benj.
