Remembering 9/11

Happy Birthday Mom! I love you and hope you have a great birthday.

Five years ago...9/11/2001 it was my mom's birday. I remember hearing the news and calling my mom to wish her happy birthday and her crying and then I began to cry. We talked about the people, the families, the children who had lost loved ones. Then I wished her happy birthday. We didn't have TV so we went to Wal-Mart and watched the news at the electronics department with about 50 other people. Our son was six months old and we thought to ourselves about him and his future and how the world had changed forever. I remember the emotions on that day and the days to come. Hate, anger, rage, sadness, fustration, confusion. People asking: Why? Searching for meaning in life. Searching for a higher power. Churches were full the next Sundays. I remember seeing Democrat and Republican hand in hand singing at the captial. For a few weeks we were just Americans. People hung out flags and found unity in who we were as American's, we shared the same pain, emotions, country and flag.
Today we remember. Today remember the families in NY, DC and Penn. Remember the troops oversees. Remember who we are as a Americans. We are a country of freedom, diversity, a land of the brave. We remember, but have we healed as a people, a nation? Have we experienced Shalom?
What do you remember? What should we remember? How can we heal as a nation? How can we experience the comfort and presence of God in the years to come? How have things changed since 9/11?
Share thoughts and remember.

I appreciate your comment on my blog and also your post today preacherman.

I also remember seeing political party lines forgotten for a week or two and people coming together to be COMMUNITY and FAMILY.

Shalom is the only way. We cannot forget that.

Blessings.

I wish to honor the overwhelming emotions you speak of. And the dead and all. This tragedy was soooo profound at sooooo many levels. I join you in commemorating the event and the aftermath.

However, I challenge you allegiance to the flag. That is the principalities and powers we as Christians are at war with. That and so many others. Look into it. It cannot be fully explained on a comment of a blog.

I suggest a look at Walter Wink's work on Unmasking the Powers and others. NT Wright offers some good thoughts in a little book called Following Jesus -especially his chapter on Colossians. And then the book Colossians Remixed by Walsh and Keesmaat. Perhaps there are others and even better places to look into it, but these have really opened my eyes.

I am not against America, but she needs to learn her place. I think it is terrifically sad that on a day of such powerful fear and destruction, that people rallied around the flag instead of Jesus. And now that flag is leading the way of war, rather than love.

Many blessings...

Thank you preacherman for this wonderful post.
I think it is important on this day we put aside our feelings about the war and remember those families without husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and children. On that day I know that our community wrapped itself around the flag and the comfort that God gives in prayer.

Scott,

I remember a mixture of emotions. Mostly feeling like the whole thing was a bad dream.

My heart goes out to the families who've lost loved ones in the 9/11 tragedies.

Great post about 9/11.
9/11 changed everything in America. Who we are and how we live. America will never be the same as it was before that morning. I don't think we can be the same. We shouldn't be the same. We should continue to hope for a better tomorrow. Hope for something better.

Preacherman,
I still have trouble watching and reading about the events. They are forever in my memory.
Anytime tragedy comes at such a large scale there is something about it that touches our souls. I am reminded that these touch our souls because we are eternal beings who grasp the severity of such events.
May our hearts never grow callous to death and our eternal nature. God truly has knit eternity into our souls.
May my sorrow over 9/11 be shown at my doorstep as I see and meet people who are eternal, whose death outside of Christ is just as tragic.
Thanks for the reminder.

Great post.

Today is a sad day for many.. no matter what I've done all day, I have the melancholy feeling as I'm sure many do. It's just not something that will ever leave our minds and hearts. Thanks for honoring the victims.

Where was God on 9/11 is an awesome e-mail I am sending to my blog friends. It is very powerful e-mail I recieved. For time sake I won't post it on your blog but it lets us know that God was with us during that day. God has not forgotten us. I pray that the victim's families will feel His presence all the more and find the peace that He provides.

Preacherman; Mike exum has a great point. The battle against the extreamest and the battle we have as Christians are two different battles fought on totaly different battlegrounds, The carnal battle leaves mangled and bleeding bodies strewn on a smoke filled battle field, the winner is usually deternined by the number of people destroyed, and the declared winner is usually the looser. The battle we Christians are engaged in is one in which we try desperatly to clear the smoke and confusion fron our battle ground, the mind yes our battlefield is the mind when we win over a mind the soul and heart is convinced also, our victory is not determined by the dead but by the living the living in Christ. our victory does not enlarge our wealth but the wealth of others yes I too was stunned and outraged by the terriable damage done to the people on that day, the early loss of those who lost loved ones and us all who lost our freedom and confidence that day.But the Christian battle is far more important and we should continue with faith and without fear. remember the most given command Jesus left us with "Fear Not"

If we give in to the fear and let it control our lives...The terrorists have won. We must not let them change who we are and what we do.
Thank you preacherman for this post.

Jason,

If we do not join the cause of Jesus, then we have lost. And we must change our ways drastically to do that.

Many blessings...
